Dear Parents,
The kids are having fun watching their plants sprout and grow. We will learn about photosynthesis and plant products this week.
We are going on several field trips this month. Fri., April 12th we will be walking to SUU to attend the performance of the Wizard of Oz. We are asking for a donation of $1.00 for a ticket.
On the morning of Mon., April 22nd will be the Life Safety House. The kids will learn about safety at home. What to do if there is a fire, how to make a 9ll call and other important skills. There will be a synthetic smoke used during part of the demonstration. If your child has asthma it is suggested that they step out for that part. Please let me know if your child should be removed. I really need a parent to go with us for this field trip because they split us up into groups. If you could help please let me know ASAP. On Thurs., April 25th will be the Bard's Birthday Bash. We will be walking to SUU.
Please make sure your student wears good walking shoes and dresses for the weather for each of these field trips.
In math we have started times tables. In 2nd grade we learn through the 5'ves. The math is getting more difficult. Many of the kids need extra practice with time, money, adding and subtracting three digit numbers with regrouping, and fractions. Please make sure they do their homework and provide extra practice if possible.
I really appreciate all you do to help your child be successful.

Mrs. Bess' News Feb. 4 - 15th
Dear Parents,
We are looking forward to Curriculum Night on Feb. 21st at 6:00. The kids are excited to share their stories, projects, and portfolios. Just a reminder that the student project is due Feb. 19th. We've had some fine projects turned in already.
We have finished Earth, Moon, and Stars and we will next study Dental Health. There is a tooth brushing record included in this week's homework folder. Please remind your child to brush and floss every night and morning.
Your student needs an empty cereal box for a Valentine container. We will be decorating them Mon., Feb. 11th. We will have a Valentine Party on the 14th. We have 25 students in our class. A class list is also included in the homework folder this week so your student can begin working on their valentines.
The last half of the month we will be learning about Patriotic Symbols.
We are still trying to get everyone to pass off the 100 add facts while starting subtraction facts as well. We are doing two-digit addition with regrouping, telling time to the nearest 5 min., and fractions.
Thank you for helping your student at home with their project and homework. Together we make a great team.

Mrs. Bess' News Sept. 4 - 14th
Dear Parents,
September is a really fun month. We are studying Rocks. Your student needs a rock for Rock Day, Sept. 12th. We will be doing some experiments with it. On Sept. 13th we will be going on a Fieldtrip to Parowan Gap, Cedar Breaks, and a hike to Alpine Pond. Please make sure your child brings a jacket and wears good walking shoes. I need another parent to help chaperone. If you could
possibly come, please let me know ASAP.
Sept. 10th is Fall Pictures. Every student will be getting their picture taken that day, even if they don't order a packet. We need it for our class picture.
On Sept. 18th there will be a vision screening. If your student wears glasses, please make sure they wear them that day.
The Second Grades will be presenting the assembly on Sept. 28th. It will be at 10:00 A.M. for grades K-2 and at 10:45 for grades 3-5.
Your student should be reading at least 15 minutes per night or 1 hour per week. Those students who return their reading record will receive a prize. We will be having a Safari themed Read-a-thon on the afternoon of Sept. 28th. It would be great if your student could bring some type of an animal snack, like animal crackers, cinnamon bears, fruit snacks, etc. They also need to bring a stuffed animal.
In Math we are learning our addition facts, even and odd numbers, and patterning.
I appreciate all that you do to help your student be successful.

Mrs. Bess' News Jan. 2 - 13th
Dear Parents,
Happy New Year! I'm excited about our new unit. We will be learning about the Earth, Moon and Stars. As part of the unit I would like my students to watch the moon each night and record the shape they see on the calendar included in this week's homework folder. Each student will also be required to do a project. Some suggestions could be: a poster of the moon phases, research about the moon, find out what is a blue moon, do a diorama, how many moons do other planets have, read a book and report about what you learned, research about ancient people and their beliefs about the moon, make a model of the Earth and moon, really any project will do, please OK it with me. The project is due Fri., Jan. 27th. Your student also needs a pringle's can. The kind with a metal bottom and a semi-clear lid. We are making a moon and star gazer. Please have the can to school by next Mon., Jan. 9th.
Something that would be fun to do is to go out to the SUU Observatory and look at the moon and stars. It is open to the public every Monday Night.
In Math we have studied all the Addition facts through 18. Your student should be able to pass off 100 facts in 5 min.
There will be no school for MLK Day. The next Flag Ceremony and AR assembly will be Jan. 25th at 9:15 and 10:00.
Thanks for all you do at home to support me and your student.
Calendar
Jan. 9 - Pringle's can due
Jan. 16 - MLK day
Jan. 25 - Flag Ceremony
Jan. 27 - Special Project due
